  • Today's the day the area finds out if we'll host the 2011 Super Bowl.

While taking Dmitry to school there was some talk about it on the radio, and someone described the situation thusly:

Indianapolis is a strong contender, as it has experience hosting large sports events (such as the NCAA Final Four), it has a very nice downtown, and its spanking new stadium will be completed in 2008, a year ahead of the new Cowboys' stadium.

However....the Indianapolis stadium will seat fewer than 70K people (IIRC....it might have been < 75K), while the Cowboys' stadium will seat 95K.

It's forecast that by the year 2011 Super Bowl tickets will be selling for $900 each.

Jerry Jones says "Do the math."

What do you wanna bet he's right?

  • "Such as the NCAA Final Four" and don't forget the Indy 500! NASCAR events are HUGE tourism-wise.

Question for Mrs. Anne -- howcum it becomes "the area" when it's something exciting and positive, and the rest of the time it's "Don't you dare confuse Forth Worth with D@!!@$!"

  • I certainly hope DFW gets the Super Bowl.  Putting up with the madness from the Indy 500 over Memorial Day weekend is not my cup of tea, let alone the Super Bowl in who knows what kind of weather.  No thanks-- far as I'm concerned, it's all yours.

  • Because it'll be in TARRANT county, over in ARLINGTON, since that's where the new Cowboys' stadium is being built.

Dallas was a pest with the Super Bowl bid, BTW, trying to strong arm the Super Bowl committee into holding virtually all important events (barring the game itself) in Dallas, threatening to refuse to participate in the bid.

From a Dallas Morning News article, dated March 28:

"In the end, everybody played nicely, as the Dallas City Council on Wednesday morning unanimously approved two resolutions backing the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Bidding Committee's efforts to score football's grandest game.

"The council's endorsement came despite several of its members in recent weeks peppering the bid committee with lengthy demands and vague threats of not supporting the bid.

"Only last week, council member Steve Salazar said: "We're the 800-pound gorilla. Without us, there is no bid." Ms. Miller, meanwhile, said last week: "We'd like the main events in Dallas because we are the lead city. We don't want to jeopardize [the bid], but we want to make a point."

    Good ol' Dallas.

  • Ah. A thousand pardons humbly requested for my jibe, then.

  • Hehehe!

Not a problem. Let's face it, you're right...if I can find a way to work Dreadful Dallas's name into something negative, and omit it from something positive, I'll do it in a heartbeat.

    I'm a bad one.

  • I'm a Dallas-ite (well, Mesquite, but Dallas County).  THere's something great about Dallas!
