  • I'd just about given up, but today I saw a monarch butterfly!

It's October first and I'm just now seeing them.  Still, I saw not just one but three today.  Poor year for them, apparently.

On a wholly unrelated note, I hate sprinkles. No, no, not the watery type that falls from the sky....the small colored bits of sugary stuff that falls from cupcakes, cookies, and cakes.

I see no point to sprinkles.  They add nothing to the taste, in fact I really dislike the crunchy sprinkles, and simply add to the mess factor.  I've yet to figure out how to eat a sprinkle-laden cookie or cupcake without getting sprinkles all over the place.

A pox on 'em, that's what I say.

  • I haven't seen a Monarch in the wild for years, but then, I don't get out and about much, either. Mel found a monarch pupae the other week, and it emerged nicely for Maggie - hey set it free the next day.

And, to bring your two issues together, Maggie's favoritest, bestest, most wonderfullest treat in the whole world is sprinkle choklit donuts from Dunkin' Donuts.

And she and Gram go for them about once a week.

PS But I'm with you. I also hate when they muck up a good eclair with colored icings and/or sprinkles. Bavarian cream and chocolate icing, please.

  • We gave up rather quickly, but we didn't succeed in finding any caterpillars to raise this year. We assumed it was because we were looking in the milkweed patch near our home, and since the monarch life/migration cycle is actually several years, there just wasn't a generation being born on our block this year.

But maybe it was a sparse year for them generally?
