  • The internet is just SO COOL.

Not only does it allow us to see videos of precious Faith and Hannah in Japan (can you believe Faith is starting to walk already?), but it helps me save on overdue fines at the library.

I'd signed up for Library Elf (see if your library's linked to it, if you've not done so already), and I'd received an email from it a few days ago to remind me of four books due today.  Put it on my iGoogle to-do list, thought of it this morning, then promptly forgot it.

This evening I got another email from it, and was distressed to realize the libraries are closed, and the books due are still here.

So I went to the Fort Worth Public Library website, logged in, went to my account, and was pleased to see that even though the brick-and-mortar libraries are closed, it's still 6/21 on the website.  Clicked on the four books due today, hit the "Renew" button, and zha-ZAM!...no more overdue books.

    I love the internet.

  • :so-cool: Well if that isn't good!! I just signed up to elf. I already use the internet to renew and order books but to find out ahead what's what is even better! Thanks! and thanks for the little video cam on my computer.  Not even an hour after Don installed it and you all left, the phone rang, 4 PM our time, 6 AM their time, and I got him on the screen and called your dad and we chatted a few minutes. Faith just woke up and wasn't too cheery but was still darling. Thanks again, the internet is really cool!! Also cool is :celebrate:having family that keeps me uptodate!! Wow.

  • That is VERY cool. Now to get the Erie County Library System on board. Wonder if I can find an e-mail address for them?

Another very cool thing is the way the emoticons now display about Xanga comment boxes. To that, I offer a hearty... :dancingcow:

  • The emoticons are here courtesy of Kathryn, in a manner of speaking. Found 'em at her site and added the script to my Xanga.

  • One of the local library systems uses Library Elf and one doesn't. Unfortunately, the one that does use it is in the county next door which costs a county outsider like me $30 per year to use! :what: So I won't get to use it until our county gets it, or until I cough up the $30 to use the other system. :sigh:

  • Can you tell I had a 7 yo hovering around me when I posted that comment?

That should read "one of OUR local library systems". We can use the county south of us if we pay $30 per year for the privilege. Unfortunately for us, they are signed up with Elf, while our county is not. I got to use it for awhile until my membership with the other county library system expired. It sure was nice.

  • I do all of my library stuff online at home, then I go to our tiny tiny little branch to return or pick up my books. Our system sends you an email to tell you when your holds are available and an email arrives the day before books are due back. Our district is part of the Colorado Springs library district so we have access to 9 (or so) libraries in the Pikes Peak region (Pikes Peak Library district). And there is a 3 day grace period before they start charging fines, and (my favorite part) our little library is closed on Sunday and Monday, so....say your book is due Wednesday, the fine doesn't start until Sunday (or Saturday midnight, but who's counting), if you turn your book into the book drop at our library before Tuesday morning when they collect the books from the book drop then it is counted as being turned in on Saturday because they date them as turned in on the last day they were open. I'm telling you, that rule has saved me an untold number of fines.

Oh, and now I'm off to the library site to see what I have due...... :wink-wink:

  • A grace period? Y'all get a grace period? :what:

Well, no wonder you refused to relocate. Not likely you're going to find any other library doing that!
