    I know, it's terrible.....your own mother!

    However, living in Japan as you do, you are uniquely positioned to report back to those of us Stateside what this particular Pizza Hut pizza is actually like:

    Doubtless your Japanese isn't yet up to the task of deciphering what's written up there, but according to Gizmodo.com, it says: 

    Pizza Hut Japan's exclusive Double Roll pie is 646 calories
    per slice, with little bacon wrapped sausages littered across the
    crust, and mini hamburger patties on top of the mushrooms, soy beans,
    corn, paprika, garlic chips, green peppers, and pepperoni. As for
    cheese, it has mozzarella, cheddar and parmigiana. BTW, this comes with
    ketchup and maple syrup for extra flavor, and is recommended for kids.

    Ketchup and maple syrup?  I'll just bet it is recommended for kids.  Why, Hannah'll be all over it.

  • Alexander, your descriptive powers will be put to full use if you can manage to afford that wicked lookin' thing! Maple syrup and ketchup - I've seen barbecue sauce recipes that start there. START, mind you.

  • It actually sounded good -- sort of like a strange mega-hors d'ouevre -- until I got to the ketchup and maple syrup. Bleahhhhh!!!!!

    BTW, in China, tomatoes are dessert fruit. Japan may be similar. Notice there are no tomatoes (other than ketchup) in this concoction? A pizza, with NO tomatoes? LOL!

  • I can't believe it!  Are there 100 mg of cholesterol in each slice?  Alex - you've gotta try it!

  • The only problem is that you all are imaging the same cultural environment that is back home.  A Pizza Hut down the road, right next to the Wal-Mart and Jiffy Lube would be no problem to go and pick up a disgusting pizza for fun.  I've unfortunately not seen a Pizza Hut in Japan.  All the pizza places they do have serve only disgusting looking pizzas.  They're all weird with mayo and fish on them and whatever else they can imagine up.  If I spot a Pizza Hut, I'll probably see about the monstrosity.  p.s. It's good to know people are looking out for my health ;)

  • Check this out.  A fellow named Josh here on the Yokosuka base made a blog about the Friendship Day events that happen every month here.  He gives a good description and addresses the pizza situation.  Sorry for making such a big deal about the pizza thing, but I think it's something worth concerning ourselves.  Perhaps you all can forward this information to your congressman. 

    "well, today was friendship day, and the friendship festival was all weekend here in Yokosuka. the actual festival was today, and the parade was yesterday. i had to work today, but it wasn’t that bad…….

    i couldn’t leave work all day, but the wifey and I took the kid to the waterfront after work to watch the fireworks. they were pretty cool, and it was a very long show!

    if you’re not sure what friendship day is, it is one of the few days of the year where the base is open to all persons. the public service areas are all open, but the housing, hospital, secured buildings, and other places where strangers shouldn’t be are roped off and patrolled by security personnel. all of the restaurants close their doors, and bring all of their food out to tables set up for outdoor sales…….. since pizza is so cheap by japanese prices on base, there is always a very, VERY long line to get anthony’s (exchange service pizza), and sbarro’s pizza. most of the Japanese people who get pizza wait a good 3 hours in line to get a pie, and it’s one pie per person for each restaurant. you see people walking all around all over town outside of base with pizza boxes in their hands. it’s friggin hillarious!!!!! it’s the one time a year when pizza is affordable for normal Japanese citizens (japanese pizza hut costs on average $35 for one meal, and anthony’s is $11). it’s not just pizza though. they also love the larger sizes of our mc’donalds servings….

    all in all, it’s a great way for japanese people to find out how we live on base, and for americans to get a good feeling of what japanese festivals are all about… great time had by all….."

    Forget it. That's too much money.

    In any case, I neglected to consider the "Oops, the restaurant's in JAPAN" factor, meaning you'd have to try to order it with you speaking English and the people behind the counter speaking Japanese.

    If the pizza's a hit, it's possible a variation of it will someday pop up here in the States.

  • A favorite pizza here in Japan is Mayo, Tuna, and Corn.  Yucky!!!  I don't think I will ever try that.  No wait...I know I will never try it.  Japan just isn't good at making their own versions of food.  Now Texas, on the other hand.  Mmmmmmm.  Texas does it all right - Tex Mex, Tex Italian, Tex French, Tex American, Tex German, Tex eat a 72 ounce steak without throwing it all back up and your a hero, Tex eat a 4 pound burger and get your picture on the wall and a certificate, it's all good!  (no wonder Dallas is one of the obesity capitals, although the steak is in West Texas, I think)

  • If you ever were to try one of those concoctions, you'd have to be be muttering, "This is not pizza, this is not pizza" as you tasted it. The only possible way you could stomach something like that would be to dissociate it entirely from pizza, and just try to see whether you liked that particular strange Japanese food. And given that, it might be okay (except the maple syrup would ruin it...)

  • There's a place west of us - still in PA! - that has a mondo-burger. I forget how much it weighs, but I remember my nephew told me it's bigger than a dinner plate. Same deal, if you can eat it all, it's free, and you get your photo on the wall. It's in (or around) Clearfield, for all (both?) of the other Pennsylvanians who frequent Anne's blog.

    Either of you know of it, and maybe hear of anyone doing it? My nephew Duke tried. And he's a Man With An appetite. Didn't make it.

    My dad did the steak thing somewhere in Texas. Can't remember where. I was more interested in getting back home to PA where Faron was.

  • Chris comes home from business trips to Japan with all sorts of stories about the food. It amazes me that he survives these trips because he is the pickiest eater on this planet. Since I don't eat beef, pork, chicken, or lamb (only fish every now and again) I'm not much of a fan of steak houses or burger joints (unless they have a nice veggie burger).

  • Anything that can't be handled by a man named Duke holds no temptation for me. 'Nuff said.

  • I don't think Beth mentioned that, apprently, there is a Pizza Hut relatively near us.  Perhaps we'll give that monstrosity a try.

  • Alex - do the Japanese people buy "US" pizza or their favorite "mayo, tuna & corn"?   I hope that Some of the folks try the high fat US version - just for fun.  Maybe there's no way you could know, w/o polling the Anthony's employees.  Which version is sold on base?

  • On base is only the yummy (well, actually pretty greasy) US pizzas.  That's why the lines are so long on friendship days.  You'd think Japan would get the idea and make some normal pizzas. 

    A friend gave me directions to Pizza Hut and an English menu.  It's interesting.  You can't even get a normal pizza.  The closest to normal would be BBQ Chicken.  Oh, and the Sausage roll crust is a crust option, like thin crust or deep dish, and there is also cheese roll crust.The only pizza I am interested in is the Sisilian, which is the only italian style I found.  It has eggplant and Italian seasonings.  Other than that, the rest are weird.  You can't just order peperoni or Italian sausage.  You have to order their strange creations.  We will try it out next week on their 1/2 off day and let you know how it is.
