  • Sort of like "30 is the new 20" for how old one appears..."pink is the new black" for style...I guess it's taking something that was real popular and comparing it with something that supposedly will be as popular. Clear as mud now? ;)

  • It's the new in thing that everyone should do.

  • Fine, I'll be the test monkey for anonymous comments.

Mud's the word, Tim. That was very helpful.

Whaddaya mean everyone should do it? How does one change one's race, for crying out loud? That's pretty much an either-one-is-or-one-isn't situation, ISTM

Not to say you're wrong, mind. Most likely that's precisely what the doofi who created the t-shirt had in mind.

(For other would-be anonymous commenters, one provides a name, email that is not displayed, and there's the ubiquitous code comprised of random letters.)

  • No, no, no, black as in Little Black Dress - the coolest, most elegant color of all, fashion-wise.

  • Well, for pity's sake.

Of course!  Trust Kelly to set us right.

    Coolest and most elegant, eh?

    Can't argue with that.  >;^>

  • OH i am kind of laughing at your misunderstanding ; )

kind of only because i am SO dead tired today. must wake up and run errands and homeschool and all that fun stuff i include in my days. (clean! play!)

  • Play is good.

Clean, not so much.  Okay, "clean" is good, but mostly when someone else does it.

  • Actually, though, I'm not keen on the idea of adoption being regarded as trendy, which is what I daresay is the subtext of the t-shirt's message.

Adopting a child, and especially one from a foreign country, should not be done so as to be viewed as "with it".  We've been blessed by our Dmitry, but at least one of the original Bright Futures camp adoptions was disrupted, and the girl now living with a new adoptive family up in the northeast.

Silly of me, how I didn't think of Madonna and those other entertainers who have begun adopting from other nations.  No doubt it's those adoptions that are the basis for the shirt.

  • I am not convinced that Kelly has it right. However, the point's still there -- among young people, "black culture" is cool. There's a certain segment of society that wants to "act black," consciously so, even if they're not.

The funny thing is that it's all based on a stereotype, which in any other context would be considered A Bad Thing. But somehow this sort of stereotyping is Cool.

On the one hand, I agree with you that it shouldn't be done to be hip. But on the other hand, if "hipness" breaks down certain prejudices some people have had about it, or at least causes them to think more positively and re-evaluate their ideas about it, that's a silver lining, or a fringe benefit, or something. :D

  • Anne, I was so irritated when I saw this. Since when is it trendy for a child to be removed from their family, for whatever reason, neglect, death, abandonment? Such insensitivity.

Our lives have been forever changed by our two Chuvashian Bright Futures sons. It was mine and my husband's future that became bright :) and now we are in process of adding another from a little further east. Thanks for the vent . . . I feel better now ; ) Linda

  • "Since when is it trendy for a child to be removed from their family, for whatever reason, neglect, death, abandonment? Such insensitivity."

Hoo boy, Linda, did you hit the nail on the head with this observation?  Amazing how often this aspect is ignored.  Older children being available for adoption means something went horribly awry in their lives, for crying out loud.

Good call, m'dear.  Very good call.

And how exciting to hear about the new addition y'all are expecting!

Another boy?  Or are y'all thinking pink this time?

  • Pink, pink - lots of pink and don't forget a little sugar and spice.

Bill was actually inspired by Steve Martin in Father of the Bride. We were watching it last Fall. I don't think there are many people inspired by Steve Martin :)

    Be well. LL

  • "The New Black" really does apply to fasion (coming from a 25 year old Advertising graduate of UNT).  There have been other campaigns like"blue is the new Black" trying to sell a new line of beautiful blue dresses instead of the most popular "Little Black Dress".

I agree...the shirt is pretty goofy and probably won't be too popular, but the ones I see wearing it are the trendy, young adopted kiddos out there, in which case, the idea of being abandoned in whatever way and needing adopted is not offensive.  It's the ones who love their adoptive parents and are proud to be adopted.

Being inspired by Father of the Bride is great.  That is one of my favorite movies.  Not the movie, but the idea is why Alex loves having a girl and is so excited to have another.  He, too, is surrounded by girls.

  • Whoa, Beth! You mean you've actually SEEN people wear that shirt?

    No WAY.

    Really?

Well, by golly, if the kids adopted don't have a problem with it and think it's cool, I suppose it's okay.

Have you read the original "Father of the Bride" by Edward Streeter? If not, I'll include it with the darling outfit I've got for Hannah.
