  • Hurricanes bring out the incredible stupidity of people.

Case in point is this photo of a woman with her son, posing for a photo (taken by another son) in Galveston with the waves crashing against the seawall:

The skull-and-crossbones is an ironic, possibly prophetic, touch.  What sort of irresponsible parent puts her children at risk for the sake of some stupid picture?  Even I wouldn't do that.  Yet that's not the first photo I've seen today showing families out to see the hurricane come in.

It's astonishing how many people are refusing to leave the island, even though the emergency personnel will be evacuating this evening.  Let me tell you, when the police, firefighters and paramedics decide to scoot, I'm going too.

  • This morning there are reports of hundreds, maybe thousands, of people pleading for rescue.  They thought they could ride it out and be just fine.   Truly, beauty is skin deep but stupid goes clear through.

What's it going to be like in your area, Anne?

  • After dire predictions yesterday of tropical-storm-force winds to be pounding the Metroplex today, very likely causing widespread power outages, and flooding rains, we've seen a shower this morning. :hmmmmm:

Kirstin had a big birthday party planned for Bryson for noon today which she canceled yesterday afternoon, based upon the forecast. TCU changed its game time. Tomorrow's annual church picnic was canceled, too, due to the continued inclement weather we were assured was going to be with us all weekend.

The rain has been taken out of tomorrow's forecast.

Looks like Ike's just pulled a Gustav on us. Mind, I had no interest in sustained 40mph winds battering us!

But it really stinks that there isn't even going to be much rain.

Then there's my nephew, Jordan, who was living in New Orleans when Katrina hit (although he'd evacuated up here), and is now living in Houston (and is down there). :so-sad:

  • Hurricane Ike!  When I talked to Jordan about 9:30 last night, he thought he would go to bed and sleep through the storm. Didn't work!  The winds got up to 100 mph!  Jordan reports that the electricity went out at 1am this morning, and came back before he called at 8pm.  The covered parking at his apt collapsed, damaging the cars, but he parked his car at his employer's garage, 1/2 block away, on the 2nd floor.  The car was fine.  Also - there was no standing water in his area, but some buildings had broken windows and roof damage.  Jordan went in to work (1/2 block walk) and they decided to go to their backup facility, which is only 5 blocks away.  He said that was the scariest ride he had ever made - due to the debris and hazards on the road.  I'm glad he is OK!

  • How great his electricity's back on. What about the water? I suppose it's still not working?

Tell you what, when it comes to cities, he sure knows how to pick 'em. :wink-wink:

  • I saw a quick news story yesterday with the news broadcaster standing in the hurricane winds, trying her hardest to stay standing, while reporting.  I swear she was pregnant.  What news channel sends their pregnant reporter to cover a hurricane?
