  • If the flight's on time (HA!) I should be on my way 12 hours from now.

    The packing is almost done.

I called American Airlines to see if by any chance there's a business or first class seat available with an upgrade with miles, but darn it, the flight's full.  Asked about the return flight and I could get on stand-by for the upgrade, and that upgrade would cost 25,000 miles plus a $300 "co-pay" and another $50 because it's within 21 days of the flight.

    CO-PAY?  When'd they start that

Decided not to do it, though I might change my mind once I arrive at the Tokyo airport.

  • Since I'll be in Japan for Southwest's homecoming....

.....Carolyn showed me the wonderful homecoming mum her sister made for
her.  'Twas a joint effort: Kim's artistic talent and Dmitry's money.

It's not a great picture as I only had my cell phone with me, but still....y'all get the idea.

Now THAT, my Yankee friends, is a proper mum!

  • Ow wow wow! And LOL!!! ;^p

    Hilarious!!!

  • Tragic story with a frustrating twist.

On January 9th of this year a toddler in a suburb of Orlando managed to get outside and fall into the family's swimming pool. He was fished out by his mother, who called 911 as she ran through the house carrying her dripping wet, unconscious baby.  Emergency personnel were able to get him breathing again, but he was left profoundly disabled, so the now-two-year-old little boy currently lives in a nursing home.

    I said it was tragic.

There was a secondary accident that day, it turns out.  One of the police officers who responded slipped on a puddle of water (caused by the sopping wet mother and child, of course) fell, and broke her kneecap.  Her injury caused her to be off work for two months on paid leave-of-absence.

She filed a lawsuit against the family.

[Sgt. Andrea] Eichhorn, a 12-year department veteran, would not discuss the suit. Her
attorney said those benefits, paid by the city's workers' compensation
carrier, were not enough. The suit seeks an unspecified amount of money.

Eichhorn, he said, is a victim. Her knee aches, and she will likely develop arthritis.

If the Cosmillos had made their pool baby-proof, police would not have
been called to the scene, there would have been no water on the floor,
and Eichhorn would not have hurt herself, he said.

"It's a situation where the Cosmillos have caused these problems,
brought them on themselves, then tried to play the victim," he said.

The original story may be read here

You know, it's not that there isn't some validity to that point, as it was remiss to not have the pool properly baby-proofed before little Joey (that's his name) began to walk, but for pity's sake, the baby was a year old!  It's not as if he were two or three.  Most likely he hadn't been walking long, and his family simply wasn't accustomed to thinking in terms of his being able to get outside without them.

I can relate.  But to sue the broken-hearted family?  What sort of a creep IS that woman?

An additional story has been posted, saying Andrea Eichhorn has been placed back on leave, and that she intends to drop the lawsuit.

Apparently the public wasn't supportive of her decision to sue.

  • I wish it weren't for such a reason.

But still, it's exciting to think that after 13½  months, I'm finally going to see my Alexander again!

On Sunday I leave for Japan, to return on Monday the 29th.

Poor Beth has been having some health problems, and she's having a hard time caring for Hannah and Faith while Alex is at work.

    So off I go!

What's nice is that three days after I leave, Beth's mother arrives for a couple of weeks; for a month she'll have live-in help.    Hopefully by the time her mother leaves, Beth'll be back in fine fettle.

What a blessing the LORD has timed things so well.

  • BRING IT ON, that's what I say!

Oh, dear. What a pity!  What a shame!  What a terrible, terrible tragedy this would be:  Cut! Deadline Looms for Hollywood Writers' Strike

What?  No more new episodes of today's television series?

    Whateffershallwedo?   DramaQ

    Personally, I'd suggest dancing a jig.  dancing_trio

Fortunately, Iron Chef America, etc. wouldn't be effected by such a strike, so I could not possibly care less.  The less trash produced for the American airwaves the better, sez I.

  • Mercy Maud! I daresay we're all familiar with the wedding shower game of making toilet paper weddin

Some people take it to a whole new level, that's for sure, complete with cash prizes.  Thanks to Mom for sending me some photos of them, and here are my favorites:

  • SPAIN!?!?!?

A recent valedictorian - the youngest contestant so far on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" - didn't know that England fought France in the Hundred Years' War?

    I'm dumbfounded.
