Once again Don proved to be correct.
As a friend once exclaimed in annoyance (back when we were all about 18 years old), “Doggone it, Ivy, why do you have to be so confoundedly right all the time?”
This time it’s his stubborn insistence that Wolf brand chili is the only canned chili worth eating. A few days ago Wolf wasn’t on sale where I was shopping but Hormel was, so I bought that. I wasn’t going to expect him to eat it; mostly it was for Dmitry, who is powerful fond of chili dogs.
I’m pretty fond of ‘em myself so the other day I decided to treat myself to one for lunch.
Hormel chili is clearly inferior to Wolf. The difference was stark….positively stark.

Add chili to my list of comestibles for which I accept no substitutes, or at least not without making a face. I inevitably purchase Jif peanut butter, Oscar Mayer hot dogs, and now Wolf chili.
Even if they’re not on sale when I really, really need ‘em.
Anyone else have nonnegotiable foodstuff items?

Heinz Ketchup, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, Lipton tea. Can’t think of too many others besides those. Of course, a year ago Coca-Cola would have topped the list, but well water has replaced that!

The mayonnaise I prefer is getting harder to find since SuperTarget quit carrying it, i.e. Kraft Mayonesa, which has a splash of lime juice in it. I love lime (with the exception of limeade, isn’t that strange?).
Kleenex. Heinz for Ketchup. I used to insist on Mrs. Buttersworth for syrup, but I didn’t use it that often, and the girls are less picky. Plus, they changed the classic round base bottle-shaped-like-a-lady to a cheap looking plastic bottle with the same form factor as every other bottle of syrup. We’re a Jif household, too, but growing up, my mother only got Skippy.
Smith’s (local brand, but emigrants have it shipped across the country) hot dogs. Wegmans tortilla chips. Bush’s baked beans. Before I had kids, it was Breyer’s ice cream, but they like ice cream way too much to hold out for the more expensive stuff, and aren’t picky.
Breyers ice cream no other will do buy it in droves whenever it is on sale. Hellmans mayonaise light and Kraft catalina dressings. Bushs baked beans and koolaid. I hate the knock off koolaids. Of course we harldy ever get it since I serve 100% juice most of the time and insist on water most of the time. I love Heinz ketchup but John had us on stirke for a long time because of the whole Kerry issue with it. I think that is about it. Of course I will take most of Publix’s knock off brands. LOVE THEM!!! Best grocery store in the country if I may be so biased. They unfortunalty can’t be found outside of Fl and GA.
My choices run more to things I WILL NOT ever eat: things like Swiss Miss Cocoa (thin), Monkey Bay wine (horrid!), canned spinach, Wonder Bread, Red Delicious apples (they are NOT), Ragu spaghetti sauce (way too sweet), Pecan Sandies ( I feel like I’m eating sand). And other things I can’t think of right now.
Ditto Cindy, plus Jif peanut butter – although since I’ve started making my own ketchup my 16yos refuses to eat anything else. My really favorite mayo is Blue Plate, but you can only get that in Arkansas and Texas, apparantly, so while living in the rest of the country I buy Hellman’s or nothing.
And Kraft tartar sauce. If I run out, I’ll make it, but has to taste exactly like Kraft’s or we just don’t care for it.
My daddy always swore by Wolf brand chili, and back when I bought canned chili, that was what I bought.
LeSuer (did I spell that right?) tiny green peas.
Amanda considers any kind of imitation A-1 to be a travesty. If she asks for A-1 at a restaurant and they bring her a store brand, they’d better have arson insurance.
I think I’ve seen the Mayonesa at Sack ‘n’ Save…possibly Super Wal-Mart too.
For the record, the only thing I like canned chili for is chili dogs and frito pie. But even then, making your own Skyline Chili does so much better…
I thought chili dogs and frito pie are the reason canned chili exists at all.
Thanks for the tip as to where to find Mayonesa in future. I bought a few jars when it was on clearance, but will be needing to restock ‘ere long.
