  • Oh, my dear paws and whiskers!  Just when one thinks everything's gotten about as strange as it can get, something comes along to really weird me out.

New at Target for Christmas this year is a tree supposedly inspired by a European tradition, i.e. and upside-down tree.  Apparently in some areas of Europe they hang the Christmas tree upside down from the ceiling.

That's pretty strange, right there.  Don't try to talk me out of thinking so.  I'm far too old a dog to learn many new tricks, and certainly not "Wow, a tree hanging upside down from the ceiling!  What a good idea!"

But peculiar as that is, it's beaten by this...

    Upside down tree
That's right, it's a fake upside down tree that, instead of being hung from the ceiling, just sorta stands there looking stupid.  And it can be yours for only $379.99!

I will say, if you've a holiday party coming up about which you're nervous, fearing your guests won't mingle and chat amongst themselves properly, this might not be a half-bad notion.  For sure, it'll definitely cause your guests to huddle together and talk, but I'm making no promises you'd be pleased to know what's being said.

  • For years my friend Dave and his wife Maureen hung their 2nd tree from the ceiling upside down.  I don't know why but I'll ask him at church.  I let you know.

  • That tree does look stupid.  Kind of like it was assembled wrong.  What moron invented that.  I like fiber optic trees.  Oh check out "holiday specs", they are so cool.  I just got a few to set on my tree for this years veiwing.

  • You know someone who hangs their tree upside down but never asked why?

Now, see...that'd have been the first words out of my mouth. "I can't help but notice you've got a tree hanging upside down from the ceiling. Any special reason?"

  • Hello, I saw you visited my site. Agreed. That tree is rather awful.

  • Am I dreaming? I thought that upside-down Target tree was all over the news last year?

Well, if it's a tradition, I guess it's a tradition. But marketing what is obviously a tradition that has no meaning to folks not used to that tradition, just to be wow and different is indeed odd. But that's Target all over! I love most of their stuff, but they are really stuck on their own image to a ridiculous degree.

But the floor-based one does look REALLY stupid.

Now, see, that's one of those "there are two kinds of people" things, Anne. There are those, like you, who would immediately want to ask why someone would do such an apparently odd thing. And then there are folks like me, who would find some reason not to ask -- either too embarrassed to admit I didn't know why, or afraid to imply that the other people were strange or stupid or crazy for doing such a thing, or afraid that the answer might reveal some horrifying mental illness on their part that I'd rather not think about.... The idea that asking a perfectly reasonable question would be the perfectly reasonable course of action doesn't occur.

  • I read about this somewhere - they hang the trees from the ceiling so there is plenty of room underneath for gifts.  Also, the ornaments show up better hung that way.  Was the Target tree decorated?  I've gotta see this!  We really need a new tree....
