Are there that many people anxious to buy organic stuff? I'll get fresh organic produce occasionally, but that's about the extent of my involvement with the whole 'organic' movement. It's coming to my attention that I'm not alone in my "Well, maybe organic canned tomatoes would be better...whoa! They want how much for this can?" disinterest, based upon the amount of organic merchandise showing up on clearance at SuperTarget. Still, Tom Thumb's ad yesterday featured their "O" merchandise, so maybe I'm out of step.
Not an uncommon occurrence, heaven knows.
September 19th is next week and is important for two reasons....one, it's the day Alex and Beth move into their apartment (which is on the TOP floor!), and two, it's the now-annual Talk Like A Pirate Day. Aaaarrrrr!
In my emailbox this morning was an ad from the aforementioned Target which spotlighted Halloween goods. Perusing the various offerings, I came across a "plus size" pirate's wench costume:
No, I don't have any serious plans to try to get hold of it (by Tuesday? I don't think so), but what caught my attention was the sizing note: "Plus size fits up to a women’s size 12".
I beg your pardon? Plus size fits UP TO a size 12?
Look, for one thing, a size 12 is next door to skinny from where I'm standing, and for another, do not try to tell me that model is wearing a size 12, for I won't believe you. She's a 14-16 if she's anything at all.
So there's the above costume presumably fitting all sizes to a miniscule 12, and then there's THIS costume which actually does come in plus sizes, right up to 3X/4X (225-275 lb) :
Are they out of their minds????

Oh my - YES they are completely nutso on the size thing. I'm one of those who will pay more for organic, use oganic gardening and pest control techniques (see Howard Garrett at http://www.dirtdoctor.com ) And thanks for the talk like a Pirate reminder. I play an online game called Yo ho ho Puzzle Pirates. Too much fun!
I wonder if it's a misprint and should say 22 or 2X. Twelve just doesn't make any sense from any point of view.
I thought so, too, but darned if there aren't other "plus size" costumes sized the same.
And Bonnieruth, as I said, I might easily be out of step (translation: cheap).
Need to find that online game! Thanks for the recommendation. ;^p
Aaaarrrr!!!
Well, I feel so much better about myself, because of the size 16 that I am wearing must indeed be a size 10 according to the first picture! Whew, I am feeling smaller already!! I have to laugh about the organic thing as well, since I live alone, my fridge contains........water, ramen noodles, and peanut butter and jelly, none of which I doubt fell into the "organic" section of the Dollar Tree!!
What really bugs me about those plus-size models is that they are so obviously airbrushed. Have you ever noticed that there's never any rolls of fat on them, even the ones that are supposed to be obviously big? Sorry, but no one will convince me, short of a million bux (yeah, I'd do it for that!) to wear that botttom getup, and I'm a very self-conscious size 10. And yes, I have one or two rolls. I'm pushing 50 fercryingoutloud!
And no I don't buy organic unless I'm having a hyper-allergic person over.
That's something that bugs me about large-size catalogues such as Silhouettes (from where I get quite a bit of my clothing)...they'll use TALL models, but not CHUNKY ones.
Makes it hard to tell how something would look on me, when it's been lovingly draped and pinned on a tall, willowly model.
Along those lines, how about those commericals touting exercise equipment using models who might be 25 years old tops. "Lose 25 lbs. in 25 days!" they proclaim. while the models have never weighed over 110 in their lives. I always tell Sam, "See, see, see? See what we could look like if we bought that?"
Show me models in their 60s or 70s using your stuff and I might be won over.
Ditto's all round! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
The "organic" thing is mostly a crock. The USDA standards for what is or isn't organic are pretty nebulous, so just about anyone can call anything "organic," jack the price up, and people will pay for it. There's also no evidence that there's any added health or taste benefit to it.

I think that I will go buy that pirates wench costume since I refuse to go above a size 12. I have two pairs of jeans that I have worn completely out but I can still get them on and they say size 12. Therefore I will go no higher. That is another size 12 that I think I will wear. My son is going as Yoda my daughter as a butterfly and my husband is going as a dad unless I can get him in a really goofy mood. Any suggestions? We will be going to Boo at the Zoo here in NOLA. Too funny love your blog I am friend of Kayroe's
I like the way your mind works, April! "I refuse to go above a size 12"...that's the spirit, by jingo. Are we gonna let a bunch of suits arbitrarily change our dress size?
We. Will. NOT!
FREEDOM!!! FREEDOM!!!
(You know, one of these days I'm gonna have to actually watch that movie.)
I buy almost all organic and I think it makes a huge difference. Food grown organically definitely tastes better (you should try organic strawberries from Target....they're wonderful!). I try to buy only organic meats and dairy products. They use so many antibiotics and hormones in most commercially raised animals today. I believe that is why girls are starting their periods so much younger these days. Also, I think the overall food value of some food is being depleted. As I'm sure BonnieRuth knows, it is hard to grow good plants in poor soil. If there are little nutrients in the soil, the plants won't be as healthy.
There are lists that tell you which foods you should spend your money on for organic and which you don't need to worry about. For example, if possible financially, you should buy organic strawberries and grapes, but can buy regular blueberries and I think blackberries. Peaches are high in pesticide use, but some other stone fruit is low. One other thing, if someone doesn't have the extra money to spend on organic produce, that shouldn't stop them from buying the regular stuff. The produce in and of itself still has value and it is better to eat regular strawberries than none at all.
