Well, I did it.
Whether it will prove to be a good idea or a complete waste of money remains to be seen, but by jingo, I've set my feet (shakily) on the path leading to something that'll both fulfill a long-held wish of mine and provide much-needed exercise.
Went and signed myself up for ice skating lessons at Ridglea Iceland.
I've tried to ice skate before on a few occasions, but always my ankles turn in and I give the whole thing up as a bad job. The guy at the ice rink says most times when the ankles cave like that it's because the skates are too big (they fit tighter than regular shoes).
We'll see, won't we? The young lady who finally showed up to take my money (I could have backed up a truck and hauled away the vending machine in the length of time it took for someone to show their whiskers....heck of a way to run a business) assured me I'm not the only, er, person of mature years to take lessons.
We'll see about that, too.
I've tried to get back into mall walking but it's just so dang dull. Did it years ago but simply can't get myself to do it regularly now. OTOH, ice skating is something I've always yearned to do, so I'd be working toward an actual goal, if only to make it around the rink without my ankles turning in or falling down.
Goals needn't be lofty to be legitimate, y'know.
What I'd really love to do is get Don and Dmitry to take lessons with me; especially Dmitry as he doesn't get any significant exercise at all these days. Somehow, though, I'm not sure how enthusiastic he'd be about taking skating lessons with his mother. Hard to put the moves on the ice bunnies with one's mother right there, after all.

Good for you! Hope you can coerce or force Dmitry to go too, He need to learn to do stuff like that. Does Don skate? I used to but wouldn't dare as I would damage already delicate joints. When I was a kid my aunt Win from NY sent me a red ice skatiing outfit! I was the one!! Wish I had a pic of me in it. Cameras weren't so prevalent in the old days.
That is awesome. I am so proud of you. Way to step up and reach for your dream. I can't wai tot hear how it goes. Maybe you can teach me when you are done.
As it get's nicer out, Hannah and I have been taking walks around a nice park we found here. It's a lot of fun. The only problem is, there is much time for nice weather before Summer heat hits. We will have to find something else by then (or just grin and bear it)
Anne, how inspiring! You are the cat's pajamas, the bees knees, and you are the BOMB!
Truly, I'm impressed that you've gone and done it. I could never manage to skate, either. Had a nice shiny new pair of skates (too big, as I recall) but couldn't keep my ankles straight nohow. Never did manage it.
You go, girl!
me<><
Well, we'll see. Don said he'll wait to see if I manage to actually learn how to ice skate, and if I do he'll be pleased to take to the rink with me.
Dmitry, after first hesitantly pointing out "Mom, you know, you're getting kinda old" has graciously offered to come down on Saturday, sit in the stands, and watch me.
He's all heart, is Dmitry.
I'm quite proud of you too. The only exercise I get is following exercise videos in the morning before the girls wake up. My favorites are Walk Away the Pounds by Leslie Sansome. I use my iPod to listen to my own music though instead of her constant jabbering. I have a few other tapes to use when I want to break the monotony of the same tape. Exercising has never been my thing. I'm proud of you. I love to ice skate! I'll go!
You can ice skate? Did I know that?
I don't think I knew that. Cool!
Way to go, Anne! And now that you've told the world you're gonna do this thing, you have to do it. None of this coming back and telling us it didn't work out. Uh uh.
And don't skates come with hard tops now to support the ankles?
Just don't fall. You may not bounce as well as you used to. Ohhhhhhhh - low blow, that.
Actually, I'm taking comfort from the thought of my built-in cushioning.
