Next time I'm at the store, I'm picking up children's Tylenol, children's antihistimine, and maybe some ear drops.
This afternoon I fetched Brianna from school and brought her home, and everything was fine. We made Valentines for her parents and Bethie, played Candyland (she won), Disney Yahtzee (she won), and were working on a game of Junior Scrabble (which she was in the process of winning) when she started occasionally wincing and holding a hand to her left ear. She'd been snuffly and blowing her nose prior to that, but otherwise fine and in a perky mood, upbeat from the delights of Valentine's Day in kindergarten.
After several minutes, the occasional winces turned into soft yelps and moans. "My ear HURTS!" Turned out to be running a slight temperature (99° by mouth, 100.4° in the hurtful ear, 97.6° in the other ear).
No pain medication. No antihistimine. Certainly not an ear drop in the house. Managed to locate a microwaveable heating pad thing, hoping it'd help, but it didn't so far's I could tell. By the time her father came to collect her an hour later she'd worked herself up into a full-blown squalling fit.

It was odd how fast that earache came on, and how bad it got so quickly.

Poor dumplin'.
Yes, it does help to have that stuff on hand.
When Stefan and Ethan and Rachel were small we kept children's Motrin and Tylenol on hand. And Dimetapp, the wonder drug. A few years ago Faron was on a rampage of de-cluttering and found that stash. "What is this stuff for? Jason's been too old for this for a long time!"
*sigh*
me<><
Just realized you're signed into Xanga on my computer...oh the fun I could have if I was meaner!
---Elaine (your VERY SWEET sister)
OK, now I'm back as me. Remember me? I'm Elaine, your sister. I have two small kids and lots of Children's Tylenol, antihistamine, and even ear drops, and I live a few blocks away. Call me next time! I could drop whatever you need by in a jiffy! Hope Brianna feels better soon. Thankfully, once you get on antibiotics, those ear infections get better as quickly as they got worse.
Poor little thing! I hope she feels better soon. I am very blessed that mine rarely had earaches.
ACK!!!!
I was staring in astonishment at my photo, thinking "Okay, Anne's gone bye-bye, for I do NOT remember reading any comments at all, never mind adding one," when I read the text.
And yes, you are a VERY SWEET sister!
And I'm the VERY DUMB sister, for that never occurred to me, not once. If it had, trust me, I'd have been squawking for help.
I'd say "Next time," only I'm really hoping there IS no "next time."
Called Jason a few minutes ago, and they'd just arrived home....over 2 1/2 hours after leaving here. He took her to a minor medical clinic where she was diagnosed with an ear infection (duh!), then off to the pharmacy, etc.
In the background I could hear "Owie! Owie!" He said when she thinks about her ear, she has an "Owie moment."
Poor guy. He sounded absolutely beat. Wonder if his driving 270 miles today from job site to job site has anything to do with that? =8^o
And just when he must have been anticipating collecting Brianna and heading home to a relaxing evening, he hears the horrible words: "Jason, Brianna's crying with an earache and running a slight fever."
Poor guy. And poor kid, of course. Glad he was able to get her same day care, though. I'll be the little thing is resting easier now.
Oh, and as an experienced mom you probably know this, but a good decongestant (like Dimetapp) can provide some relief for an earache until the antibiotics can be obtained. So it'd be good to have some of that around, if your grands are prone to such things.
NO - STOP. DON'T BUY TYLENOL. Melaleuca makes a kids line of medicine for kiddos. Kids CounterAct Cold and Counter Act Pain Releiver. We use it for Hannah, and it works great. There is also Koala Pals Hand wash, Tooth paste, shampoo and body wash, and Vitamins for kids.
Good point! I'll do that.
