  • Does anyone else occasionally take a sack of books down to Half-Price
Books to sell?  If so, does it seem to you they're getting
chintzier and chintzier in what they'll give for 'em?  Just took a
sack of books (individual titles, not groups in a series) to one and
received the miserly sum of $8.35.

Only once have I refused to take what was offered, as it's usually too
much of a nuisance to even think about hauling them back home again,
which is, I daresay, what they're counting on.  Still, they must
be paying 40 cents for a book they'll sell for six to ten times that
amount.  Nice gross profit percentage!  Most businesses don't
    gross anywhere near that much.

  • I have never brought any books to half price books. I have a couple of friends I give books I've read to, and they do the same for me in return. It works out cheaper that way, cause I get new books to read without paying anything when I've already paid the prices for the other ones, and same for them. Works if you can find some friends with similar reading interests!!!

  • We always take our books to the library sales. But, c'mon, Anne. Aren't you just sore because you didn't think of this business first?  (wink)

  • Nice gross MARGIN, you mean, dear. I imagine it takes a lot of $2.00 markups on used books to keep the lights on and the store staffed, while they don't do the volume of lower markup businesses (aka grocery stores.)

At any rate, they're paying exactly what they should be for your used books and charging just what they should for resale -- as is evidence by the fact that you nearly always accept it their offer and continue to buy from them.

  • sorry about the bad spelling and syntax above...
