It's a sad thing when...
...a debate between actors posing as politicians is meatier and more
substantive than actual debates between real politicians. "The
West Wing" tonight is a live - that's what Don says,
anyway - extemporaneous exchange between two fictional
presidential candidates, one of them Alan Alda, but I don't know the
name of the other one. They have done a deedy job, that's for
sure. It's been quite entertaining and enlightening, as both make
excellent cases for their respective sides.

LOL. I suppose since they're not really trying to get elected they feel free to say what they actually believe!
Of course, since someone wrote the script for them, they don't have to worry about thinking up what to say, weighing the effect of their answers on both their opponent and the public, and presenting it smoothly all at the same time.
I daresay that makes it a LOT easier.
Oh, it was unscripted?
Still, they don't have to worry about how their answers will be received. Not merely in the somewhat cynical way Kelly suggests, but also just the idea that you can sound really good if what you say isn't going to matter a hill of beans in 20 minutes -- it's a lot harder to sound good if you actually have to live with the effect of your words.
