Talk about putting things in perspective. Next time I think,
"Wow, what a rotten day this is!" I'll try to remember the Polish
research team that had capsized and managed to make it to a small
island 650 miles from the North Pole. According to a quote at
CNN, "It was the worst imaginable situation. They were cold and wet,
had no
equipment or weapons, and were surrounded by hungry polar bears."Okay, that's a bad day.
A helicopter rescue team arrived when the stalking bears were
approximately 20 yards away. "That is dangerously close," the spokesman
gravely said.

I post a true story about stranded, helpless people stalked by hungry polar bears only to be saved in the very nick of time, but no one comments?
Y'all are a tough crowd.
When one takes it upon oneself the go to the North Pole in a small boat, one must expect some problems! This is where polar bears live for goodness sakes!! Take a gun, take fire crackers, stay away, and be ultra greatful that someone had a helicopter to save them from their fool hardiness!!!
What Joan said. It's a harrowing story to be sure, but for me, it already got harrowing at the point where "These guys get into a boat in the Arctic Circle..." so while it was obviously quite a big deal to the people involved, in another sense, it's kinda dog bites man. Newsflash: people go to Arctic Circle in a boat, and dangerous things happen. Ya THINK?
Most of them don't get stalked by polar bears, though.
Boy oh boy . . . just love to see if Christopher grows up to be a researcher in the Arctic and he gets stranded and nearly eaten by bears, you take a stance of "Well, I'm sure it was quite unnerving but after all, that's what happens to people in the Arctic....they're regularly noshed by hungry bears. You will try to be more careful in the future, won't you, dear?"
No, no, no, I'll just say, "THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T WANT YOU TO BE A RESEARCHER IN THE ARCTIC!"
I didn't say the polar bear thing wasn't harrowing, I said the harrowing started BEFORE that.
Please pay attention.
