Why call it a "farmers' market" if, so far's I can see, local farmers have nothing much to do with it?
For ages I've been meaning to stop by the Ridgmar Farmers' Market to
the west of Ridgmar mall, and this morning I actually did so.Color me underwhelmed. It seems to be mostly a nursery, with
flowering plants and trees, and the produce appears to be the same
stuff I can get at any local grocery store ... Driscoll strawberries,
for example. There was a big "branded" box of yellow
onions. Sunkist oranges. A Texas farmers' market with
pineapples?Didn't know pineapples grew around here.

I am disappointed in your review! I had hoped to make it a stop on my "rounds". But why bother? I guess I will try some time just in case. We'll see. Minyards and Tom thumb's produce suit me fine!
Oh well, here I go again, I thought you were talking about the new one opening behind 6333!!!! Go there and report back.
AAAaahhhh, our Farmers Market will start in June...probably close to the end of June. Peaches from Grand Junction, melons from Rocky Ford, corn, onions, squash, potatoes, carrots from east of Denver or Pueblo. There's a few things that are trucked in like the supermarket, but we get a great deal of Colorado fruit and veggies. Guess we're lucky!!
Chrerie, you're a Meanie!!! But I'll bet our Parker cty peaches are better than your peaches. We need to have a taste off. Don't know how that would work, but would be fun!
It may be that a lot of the stuff is local, but they include stuff that isn't available from local growers in order to encourage people by making it a one stop shop. Like, "Oh, why bother going to the Farmer's Market if I'm going to have to go to the supermarket to get my oranges anyway?"
I dunno, it's a hypothesis.
But pineapples? Mangoes?
I promise we don't grow those around here.
It was just very disappointing, in the main.
But that's what I mean.
At least for myself, I'm less likely to go somewhere where I can't get everything I want at once, even if that means I have to settle for inferior quality of some of it. If I want pineapples and mangoes and peppers, and I'm thinking, "But if I go to the Farmer's Market for my peppers, I'll STILL have to go the supermarket for the pineapples and mangoes," I'm far more likely just to chuck it and go to the supermarket, period. Not everyone does that, but plenty of people do, I'm sure.
So maybe the Farmer's Market stocks that non-local stuff just to avoid that issue. I dunno -- like I said, it's a hypothesis.
You might be right. ISTM they needed the "foreign" stuff because there was so little local.
I haven't ever been to a farmers market. I should go sometime.
