I get annoyed at the most picayune stuff.

Case in point: Why the deuce don't the people who design food
packaging put the pour spout on the TOP of the box, rather than an inch
down one side?Take a box of Sugar In The Raw as an example. Yesterday morning I tried and tried and tried
to get every crystal out of the box and into the sugar bowl, twisting
and tilting the box every which way, but finally declared defeat and
tossed it out with perfectly good, though unattainable, sugar still
inside.Bet there was a good quarter teaspoon at a minimum . . . maybe even as much as a half a teaspoon . . . trapped inside.
Hey, they aren't giving that
stuff away, you know. Now, were the spout to be on the top of the
box, I'll bet I could get darn near everything out.

{whispering} Rip the top off the box to get the last bit out.
Why they don't put it on the top? My guess is that it would be easier to spill, thus leading to a greater degree of consumer dissatisfaction than is caused by that last 1/2 teaspoon. But maybe it's just tradition.
Oh.
Well, I suppose I could do that.
Still seems to me there's a better way to design those boxes.
Pancake batter's the same way.
And when I finished the last box of Sugar in the Raw, I ripped the top off. But that's a whole spoon for me - maybe even two. Think I should write the packagers of Sugar in the Raw and send them the Legend of the Spoons? Show how they're causing sick people unddue stress?
Seriously, it does take a lot of energy to rip the top off the box. And for no good reason that I can think of.

would kitchen shears work to cut through the box? That's what I'd go for, rather than trying to rip the thing apart. But then again, I always go for the church key, in lieu of twisting off a beer cap with my hands.
Cascade powder works the same way, but when the box is almost empty, I just stick my thumb in the little hole by the metal pour thing, and just R-I-P, and then I put the rest of the powder in to the dishwasher and hit go.
Sure it'd work to cut off the top - but, as my father used to say about just about everything, "If we can put a man on the mooon, you'd think they'd figure out a way..."
Sheesh!

I do the same thing Plumtree13 does. Actually, now I buy sugar in the raw in the bulk foods section of Whole Foods. The plastic baggie is a whole lot easier to deal with than the blasted pour thingy on the side of the box. AND have you ever noticed that if the pour thingy is covered the "cut here" marks are always a good half inch off?
I do it Phillip's way, too. With salt I always pull off the spout then pop out the edge of the top with my thumb and get the last bit out that way.
