  • It's an odd thing how what someone probably wouldn't dream of saying to
another person's face, they'll say in the most public forum possible.

Granted, Nicolette Sheridan dresses in a manner which leaves a lot to
be both desired and covered up, but I have to feel sorry for those who
are pilloried in Blackwell's annual Worst Dressed lists.

Does Mr. Blackwell actually walk up to people and say, "Good heavens, you DO look a fright!"?

Why is it rude to point out in person how ghastly someone looks, but it's acceptable to codify and publicize it?

  • I think it makes a difference if the person is a public figure dressing specifically for the purpose of promoting a public image (and who has the means not only to afford anything she wants but to pay people who can advise her on good taste), or an ordinary person who's just trying to look her best.

IOW, if someone writes a lousy novel and it gets published, it's fair game for critics, but you wouldn't tell your best friend that her blog is good only for insomniacs (no, that is not a veiled comment directed at any actual person. )

Likewise, if someone dresses for the obvious purpose of public consumption and public image, it's fair game to subject her attire to criticism in ways that you would never take after a friend.

  • Hmmm.  I suppose.

Still has always struck me as a tad on the tacky side.

I wonder how people feel who find themselves on such a list?  Doesn't it bother them?  OTOH, considering the hideously bad taste displayed by some, one wonders if it wasn't deliberate.  Hard to believe these people can look at themselves and not think, "Well, woof."

  • I find Blackwells list both entertaining and ghastly. The famous know they are going to be photographed and scrutinized, so one would think if they were out and about promoting their newest movie/book/show/etc they would dress accordingly....and well, one would think they'd look in the mirror before going out!
