  • I love that song.  I never knew about just the black notes.  That’s amazing!

Have you see the movie Amazing Grace?  That was a great movie.  It is the story about the man who wrote it and his journey to this song.

  • Amazing Grace isn’t about the man who wrote the hymn — though John Newton does play a part. It is more about William Wilberforce, whom Newton counseled as he led the fight against the British slave trade.

Unfortunately, I can’t get the video to play. What does “just the black notes” mean?

  • There are five notes played with the black keys. All Negro spirituals can be played with only those five notes. John Newton, prior to his conversion to Christ, had been the captain of a slave ship, so Mr. Phipps is theorizing that it was on that ship the tune to Amazing Grace was overheard, and later on, Newton set the words to his famous hymn to it.

As he pointed out, when one looks at the citation for AG, the lyrics are credited to John Newton, while the tune is credited to Unknown.

  • Great video – thanks so much for sharing it!  I just came back from Gettysburg/DC and learned so much about the terrible, long journey “they” had to endure to be granted FREEDOM!
