  • So is anyone else watching “Next Food Network Star”?

For those who saw it last night…..mercy Maud, what on earth got into Paula Deen?   e-11_confused

She was flat-out rude to Lisa, telling her  -  after having already made quite clear Lisa’s mac-and-cheese wasn’t up to snuff  -  that “Actually, I hate it.”

Well, golly, Deen certainly has the kick-someone-when-they’re-down routine down to a science, doesn’t she?  e-7_mad

What’s really puzzling is trying to figure out why that nasty bit wasn’t edited out, as it showed Deen in an extraordinarily unflattering light.  e-headscratch

I was sorry to see Kelsey go, though pleased Aaron did so well.

Incredible that the latter plumb forgot the second part of the throwdown, i.e. the Chicken Parmigiana he had to make!  Bless Lisa for managing to give him The Eye sufficiently that he remembered it.  Twenty minutes before the end!  And yet he pulled it off.  Amazing.

  • I’m watching it. I think they included that bit where PD was so – forthright – to make it clear that this is the majors – you have to be able to make a basic dish well, all the time. And to make your signature dish in such a goofy way was very stupid of Kelsey. You have to be able to recognize the dish. Her chicken parm didn’t even look close to what one would expect, same with that mac and cheese of Lisa’s.

Aaron’s forgetting was pretty amazing in itself, but chicken parm isn’t hard to make, and he had all the ingredients and perfect tools – to have hot fat ready to go just made it a cinch. I’d like to cook in a kitchen like that for a day or two!

  • There’s forthright and then there’s being ugly, and Deen was ugly, IMO. I’ve been reading the comments over at Joe Tushman’s blog and heaps of people took umbrage at that unnecessary smack-down. As someone pointed out, it’d have been one thing had she sort of gave an apologetic moue while saying “Lisa, I’m sorry, but I hate it”, but it’s something else again to criticize her dish then pile on by adding an emphatic “Actually, I hate it.”

To be fair to her, Deen did lavish praise on the cassoulet. Which looks pretty darn good, though I’m going to skip the duck comfit and most likely the spinach pesto as well.

Am giving serious consideration to making Aaron’s stuffed pork loin dish.

And when it comes to mac-and-cheese, the appropriate meat product is hot dogs, not lobster. Yuck. Though I was pleased for Adam’s sake that the judges liked it.

So who do you think’ll get the boot on Sunday? I’m guessing Adam.

  • Yeah, I agree, although Aaron took a big hit from Bobby about not knowing what chipotle` was. That was kinda dumb. And Adam knew.

And, what’s the “first time ever…” on NFNS? A black contestant wins? Or they eliminate two at once? Or is the star sous chef thing?

Silly show – and here it is Tuesday and I’m still thinking about it!

  • Don speculated that no-one would be eliminated that week after all. Only thing is, the teaser doesn’t sound as if they all did such a spectacular job on next Sunday’s challenge…as usual, the comments from the judges indicated everything and everyone had failed miserably.

Which is what it sounds like every time, only when the program actually airs, it’s never anywhere close to that bad.

  • Oh gee – I didn’t know about this new show!  Thanks for the tip!
