Well, he's off.
It's 10:30 p.m. in Japan, so the USS Blue Ridge - the ship Alex will be on for the next couple of months - should be underway.
Turns out he doesn't hit Australia this trip....they'll make a separate trip Down Under in April.
Told him to be sure to take lots of pictures of the keen places he'll visit, and to search for internet cafés when in port.

A ship named for a mountain range? Isn't a little... odd?
It's definitely unusual to have a military vessel named for a geographical/geological feature instead of a person or specific locality such as a state or city, 'tis true.
Did Alex take his tuba with him? Smooth sailing to Alex!
Hey, I forgot that I can get on the internet in such a way that I can update my blog. I'll go do that now. p.s. I did take my tuba. The band will have many engagements where I will need it.
