  • Again I am perplexed at what qualifies as BREAKING NEWS these days.

A year or two ago it was something to do with a racehorse.

This morning the shrieking red banner provides this stunning, crucial bit of news:

'DREAMGIRLS' LEADS OSCAR NOMINEES WITH 8 NODS, 'BABEL' FOLLOWS WITH 7 NOMINATIONS

  • I couldn't believe it, either, Anne. And, headline news on the inside front page of the paper this morning? The fact that "Sunshine Girl" was nominated for best picture, when "Dreamgirls" didn't get THAT particular nod.

    sheesh.

  • Every single stinking year our local newspaper devotes a full page in the entertainment section to the shocking news that American Idol is returning for another season.

Granted, it's the entertainment section, but still. It drives me up the wall when newspapers devote large amounts of ink not to telling things we didn't know, but instead blathering endlessly about what we already knew.

Another common practice for our newspaper is to report on the front page that it's really hot in the summer, or that we had a lot of snow the day before, in the winter. Excuse me? I have to pick the newspaper to learn that? And it's ERIE, so it's not like it's UNUSUAL.
