Don’t know if this is what the dining room looks like on the Dallas or not, but the ex-submariner’s blog, The Stupid Shall Be Punished, has a small photo of one, along with telling of a prank or two that would occur.

That’s the officer’s dining room…the dining room (the mess) on a sub for the regular crew just looks like a bunch a booths (not padded) and tables in a row…with an aisle down the middle. Sorta like a tiny McDs or diner.
On boomers, the aisle is filled with boxes of food, which dwindle away while they are underway, leaving a hazardous maze of boxes and holes…
The ward room is more like a dining room.
Aha! Thanks. I was surprised, as I’d gotten the impression from Charles the dining room was larger than that. He also told of mazes created by boxes and walking atop large cans of food, which would dwindle the longer they were underwater.
However, I’d no idea the mess on a sub had booths like that. Sort of imagined long tables with benches on either side. For no particularly good reason, granted, but that’s what’s been my mental image.
Booths are nailed down. Very important on a sub.
Ah. Another good point.
Kinda reminds me of high school & camp days. Kids are the same all over the world aren’t they???
