  • Sometimes the LORD has a puckish sense of humor.

Charles just called.  He got his orders!

In September he’s to report to the USS Dallas

  • That’s great!

I almost served a tour on the Dallas. When I transferred from Orlando, I was given a choice between Dallas and Narwhal. Normally, I would have chosen the newer and nicer boat. Problem was, Dallas was homeported out of Groton, CT. Narwhal was based in Norfolk, VA. I chose Virginia over Connecticut.

Where is USS Dallas based now?

  • Still Groton. Charles was the only one who requested staying at that base. Most everyone else wanted San Diego, Honolulu, etc. ;)

He likes the proximity to Noo Yawk City, Bahstan, etc.

  • My brother’s godfather was a sub commander from WW2, a Cmdr. Bradley. A funny story about him: Once he was out doing some top-secret stuff somewhere in the Atlantic, and he would get coded messages from his superiors.  He didn’t know who was the individual sending them, and the individual sending them did not know to whom they were sent. It turned out that his wife was the individual sending them– she never knew she was sending those messages to her hubby’s sub.

  • My sister in law lives in Conneticut. I hear it’s a nice place (San Diego is one of the few places in Southern California that I will say is nice also, a friend was stationed in Honolulu and said that it’s terribly expensive and not that great a place to be stationed).

Hey thought of you while we were in lovely Wendover NV/Ut, we ate at a casino on the Nevada side. I don’t gamble. But walking through the casino I thought I’d drop in a coin or two on the way to the restaurant portion of the place. I carefully dug the change out of the bottom of my purse (all .77 worth) and walked up to a penny machine (ya can’t call me cheap). I couldn’t find the coin slot. So I walked up to a nickle machine. No slot. So I asked the lady who was walking around the restaurant asking people if they want to play Keno while they eat (I don’t even know what the game is, so why would I want to play while I eat?). She said that the machines don’t take coins anymore. Only paper money or some card. My son told me he had a $20, now. I told him I tried a penny machine and a nickle machine. I patiently told him that I never ever bet more than that. Back in the day, when the one armed bandits took real change, the husband and I, both times we went gambling, would each go get $2 worth of nickles and when they were gone we called it a good trip. Hmmmpphh, don’t take change (oh well, I’m .77 cents ahead I guess).

  • No coins? Only cards or bills???

    Well, phooie on that. >8^(

Elaine used to live in Connecticut and liked it. I’m hoping we’ll be able to get up there after he returns from his first deployment or whatever it’s called when the sub goes out and about.

  • Of course CT is a nice place.  I grew up there. It depends alot, like most states, on where one is located. Stay away from the parts within about 80 miles of NYC.  After that it gets better.

  • Could you imagine ME in Connecticut! It’s laughable…they don’t even celebrate “Lee-Jackson Day”.

I’m glad that Chas got the billet he wanted.
